README
This README contains important information not found in the
User's Guide or in the online help. (For better readability,
change to a monospace font.) If you do not have the hardcopy
User's Guide booklet, refer to the information online in the
USRGUIDE.DOC file in the root directory of each CD.
To read this information in Japanese, refer to the file
READMEJ instead of this README, using appropriate machine
settings for displaying Japanese characters.
General Information
___________________
o Run the installation program, DEVCON.CMD (OS/2) or DEVCON.BAT
(DOS), to install each new volume of The Developer
Connection for OS/2.
o Before running the Volume 12 installation program, make sure the
Catalog folder is closed and that the OS/2 Catalog and Browser
programs are not running. It is not necessary to delete The
Developer Connection folder.
o If you are installing Volume 12 over Volume 10 or earlier, you
must also be sure the Browser folder is closed prior to
installing Volume 12.
o Your LIBPATH statement must contain the current directory
(".").
o Starting with Volume 10, changes are needed in your CONFIG.SYS to
use the Catalog. These changes can be made for you during the install,
or you can manually update your LIBPATH and DPATH using the entries in
the CONFIG.ADD file created during the installation. You must then
reboot your machine. If you start the catalog before rebooting, in
some cases your machine can lock up, so be sure to reboot.
o If you encounter a SYS2070 error when using the DevCon Catalog,
you may have an older version of the devconvl.dll in a different
directory from the current version of this DLL. The correct
version will be in the x:\devcon\dll directory. You can remove
any older versions that may be in the x:\devcon\install directory
and remove x:\devcon\install from your LIBPATH.
o Many products have been updated and should be reinstalled.
Refer to the Content List or the online "What's New in
Volume 12?" for a list of updated products.
o Many of the products included in The Developer Connection
for OS/2 include README, .DOC, or .TXT files. Refer to
these files for product-specific information. For many products, you
can view the main "readme" type file for a product directly from the
catalog prior to installing the product.
o To install products directly from the CDs without using the Catalog,
refer to the file CONTENTS.OS2 in the root directory of each OS/2 CD
for information and instructions.
o Before you install Volume 12 of The Developer Connection, remove
products from your system if you installed them from Volume 11 and
the license has expired.
NOTE: If you have installed the demo version of OS/2 Warp from
Volume 11, you can continue to use it.
Information Related to OS/2 Warp Version 4
__________________________________________
o In Volume 11, the IBM Developer's Toolkit for OS/2 Warp Version 4
replaced the IBM Developer's Toolkit for OS/2 Warp. This new toolkit
incorporates support for new features in OS/2 Warp Version 4. Some of
these features, such as OpenDoc and Open32 (previously known as the IBM
Developer API Extensions or DAPIE), are available on OS/2 Warp Version 3
via FixPak 17 or later.
The IBM Developer's Toolkit for OS/2 Warp on the Developer Connection
for OS/2 Volume 9 Special Edition and Volume 10 included support for the
operating system features introduced in FixPak 17. If you are taking
advantage of these features in your applications, please use the IBM
Developer's Toolkit for OS/2 Warp Version 4, which provides the toolkit
support for these features as well as other enhancements for OS/2 Warp
Version 4. OS/2 Warp Version 4, or OS/2 Warp Version 3 with FixPak 17 or
later, is required if you wish to use these new features.
o When installing the IBM Developer's Toolkit for OS/2 Warp Version 3
on an OS/2 Warp Version 4 system, before you reboot it is necessary
to remove the SOM Runtime files that have been installed with the
Toolkit.
1. Delete these files from the TOOLKIT\SOM\COMMON\DLL directory:
SOM.DLL
SOMD.DLL
SOMEM.DLL
SOMIR.DLL
SOMS.DLL
SOMSEC.DLL
SOMTC.DLL
SOMU.DLL
SOMUC.DLL
2. Delete these files from the TOOLKIT\SOM\COMMON\SYSTEM directory:
SOMD.MSG
SOME_OS2.MSG
SOMK.MSG
3. Reboot.
o Note that the entries in the IBM-OS/2 category for OpenDoc and
Security Enabling Services are for installation on OS/2 Warp Version 3
with FixPak 17 or later. For OS/2 Warp Version 4, this functionality is
provided as optional components of the base operating system
installation.
o Note that the entry in the IBM-OS/2 category for Open32 no longer provides
this as a separate installation, as this functionality for OS/2 Warp
Version 3 has been updated and is now included in OS/2 Warp Version 3
FixPak XR_W026.
Information Related to OS/2 Warp Version 3
__________________________________________
o If you are not currently using any enhancements introduced in FixPak 17
or OS/2 Warp Version 4 in your OS/2 Warp Version 3 applications, you can
use the IBM Developer's Toolkit for OS/2 Warp Version 3, located in the
Archived Toolkits subcategory of the Developer Connection Volume 12. As
a convenience, we provide archived levels of the Toolkit for those
developers who want to target previous levels of OS/2. Note that the
IBM Developer's Toolkit for OS/2 Warp Version 3 is identical to the IBM
Developer's Toolkit for OS/2 Warp on the Developer Connection for OS/2
Volume 9 and does not contain support for the new features introduced in
FixPak 17.
o A prerequisite for several products on OS/2 Warp Version 3 is OS/2 Warp
FixPak XR_W017 or newer, which is located in the Service category.
Be sure to install it PRIOR TO installing any of the following:
* OpenDoc for OS/2
* Multimedia OpenDoc for OS/2
o If you have previously installed the prerelease version of the OpenDoc
Developer's Kit for OS/2, you must remove it from your system prior
to installing FixPak XR_W017 or later. To ensure all prerelease files
are removed and the respective INI entries cleared, we recommend that
you reformat your OS/2 boot partition for a fresh start. You may also
be successful removing the files without reformatting by following the
instructions in the OpenDoc Readme file.
o OS/2 Warp FixPak XR_W017 or later is also a co-requisite for the
following:
* IBM OS/2 Security Enabling Services
IBM OS/2 Security Enabling Services (SES) is implemented as an
optional component of the base operating system, and may have
updates provided in future FixPaks (XR_W018 or later). This
component must be installed in order for the FixPak to detect it and
install any related updates. If you install SES after installing
FixPaks numbered XR_W018 or later, reinstall the latest FixPak to
update the SES component.
The Security Enabling Services package for OS/2 Warp Version 3 includes
a reference to documentation on using the APIs, and a mailing address
to submit a request for this documentation. The information is now
available in RedBook form on DevCon disc 2. You can view this
document by using IBM LibraryReader/2 to open \DOCS\SG244668.BOO on
disc 2.
The Developer Connection for OS/2 Catalog
_________________________________________
o Many product installations require a final "OK" or "Exit"
to return control to the Catalog. If you make the Catalog
active prior to completing the product installation, there
might appear to be no activity in the Catalog window. Check
to see if a product installation is still open; if so,
return to that window and exit the installation.
o You can run only one copy of The Developer Connection
Catalog at a time.
o A timeout problem with the VisualAge Requirements Tool on
Volume 11 was identified, and a fix was available for
download. The package has been updated on Volume 12 to
incorporate this fix, so if you did not download the fix
you might want to take another look at this tool. We
apologize for any problems or confusion with this product.
o You must have OS/2 multimedia support on your system before
you can install some multimedia applications, such as
CD Explorer and OpenMPEG.
o If you install Gpf Systems products from a remote CD-ROM
drive, some of the files might not install. We recommend
that you use a local CD-ROM drive or create installation
diskettes to install these products.
o Source-code makefiles sometimes assume a specific environment,
which might be incorrect for your environment. Changes to
the makefile might be necessary.
o When installing IPF Editor from Perez Computing Inc., be
aware of the following:
1. The installation program might temporarily display an
error message indicating the files cannot be copied
correctly to the destination drive. This is normal;
installation typically continues successfully.
2. The installation program copies your CONFIG.SYS file
to CONFIG.BAK and updates your CONFIG.SYS for you. If
you already have a CONFIG.BAK, rename it before you
install this product to ensure that your file is not
overwritten.
o To install APPC Showcase, Communications Manager must be
installed and running.
o When using the TRY option for the Point 'n' Shoot, you may see a
message prompting you for a diskette. If you click on OK to dismiss
this message, you can continue to TRY the product.
o To install and run DatagLANce you must be using OS/2 Warp with WIN-OS/2
Version 3 or newer. DatagLANce may lockup the computer if you
run the program on an earlier version of OS/2.
o Some systems are known to experience focus problems related to the
Z-order, which can appear to prevent the installation of some products
through the Catalog. If the installation window for a particular
product you are installing fails to get the focus properly, you can
either move the position of the Catalog away from the installation
window, or minimize the Catalog, and select the installation window
to place focus there. One example of products that have shown this
problem on some machines is the NetView DM/2 family of products.
These options have enabled installation in all our test cases.
The Developer Connection DOS Diskette Creation Utility
_______________________________________________________
o The DOS Diskette Creation Utility does not support multiple
CD-ROM discs. To make diskettes, you must ensure that the
correct disc is in the CD-ROM drive when you select a
product from the Catalog. Refer to CONTENTS.OS2 in the
root directory to determine which disc contains the
product you want to install.
The Developer Connection for OS/2 Browser
_________________________________________
o The Developer Connection Browser introduced in Volume 11 displays
only searchable text and INF (compiled IPF) documents, making it easier
for you to select files for a multiple-document search.
o You can still view BookManager (BOO) and PostScript (PS) books online
by opening the new DevCon Online Books object in The Developer
Connection folder. DevCon Online Books displays titles for all of the
available documentation and allows you to search for specific titles.
To view BookManager or PostScript books you must install the required
software as described in the following sections.
o A few RedBooks have been provided with unusual data appearing on the
front page. The remainder of the pages in these documents can be
viewed properly. The information in these books is valuable, so we
chose to ship the books in spite of this initial cosmetic problem.
BookManager-Format Documentation
________________________________
o To read BookManager files (*.BOO), the following conditions
must be met:
1. Library Reader/2 must be installed. (It is located in the
Productivity Tools category.)
2. The CD-ROM drive letter must be the same drive letter
you specified as containing .BOO files when you installed
Library Reader/2.
3. Disc 2 must be in the CD-ROM drive.
NOTE: You may use a version of Library Reader/2 if you
already have one installed; however, the version
provided since Volume 7 has a "fix" for OS/2 Warp.
o When you are using Library Reader/2 to access the bookshelves,
you may get a message stating that the bookshelf file or the
bookshelf search index file may be corrupted. There does not
seem to be a problem with these books. If you select OK, the
books will display correctly.
o The book "IBM Installation Techniques: The CID Guide" in
BookManager format refers to files on a CD that typically
accompanies this hardcopy book when ordered through IBM. These
files are located on your Developer Connection for OS/2 CD-ROM
disc 2 in the \BOOKS\CID\GG244295 subdirectory.
PostScript-Format Documentation
_______________________________
o PostScript files are in the \PSCRIPT directory on Disc 2
of The Developer Connection for OS/2. If you have a
PostScript printer, you can print these files from a command
prompt.
o Volume 12 provides a PostScript viewer, PageTurner by Magus,
which you can install and use to view PostScript files shipped
on Volume 12. You can also use PageTurner to print selected
pages or the entire document. Printing to non-PostScript
printers is supported.
HTML-Format Documentation
_________________________
o Documentation in HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) format is
in the \HTML directory on Disc 2 of The Developer Connection
for OS/2. To view these files, you must have a Web Browser,
such as the WebExplorer in the OS/2 Warp BonusPak.
Refer to the READHTML.DOC file in the \HTML directory for
more information.

The Developer Connection Direct Install Information
This document provides installation instructions for each product on
this volume of The Developer Connection. While the preferred method of
installing any of the products is via the Developer Connection Catalog,
you can install the products directly.
In the installation instructions for each product,
* refers to your boot drive (typically C), and
* refers to your CD-ROM drive.
NOTE: We recommend that you cut/paste the information contained in
this list to another file, rather than retyping it, as it is
important to use the EXACT invocations shown in this file
(after substituting your boot drive and CD-ROM drive letters).
This file is probably best viewed in a monospaced font, so that
all blank space is apparent.
